C ROUTE 8 BRIDGES REMOVAL &
REPLACEMENT
DSEE Group Inc. was selected for the CTDOT Design/Build
Removal and Replacement of Bridges 03761, 03762, 03764, and
03765 along Route 8 in Bridgeport, CT. This project marked
the first Design/Build initiative for the Connecticut
Department of Transportation and involved the accelerated
demolition of 16 bridge spans, followed by the design and
construction of 10 new replacement spans. The scope included
bridge demolition, new superstructures, substructure
repairs, cast-in-place concrete walls, earthwork, and
roadway construction.
Utilizing Accelerated Construction Techniques, DSEE Group Inc. partnered with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff to develop a comprehensive design supporting these methods, particularly through onsite prefabrication of bridge superstructure units. The team completed the bridge demolition, reconstruction, and over 30,000 cubic yards of roadway and structural fill within two 14-day shutdown periods—four days ahead of the schedule provided by CTDOT. This meticulous planning, prefabrication, and coordination allowed DSEE Group Inc. to achieve two construction seasons' worth of work in just 28 days.
The project was completed under budget, ahead of schedule, and earned several regional and national industry awards. Serving as the Design/Build Prime Contractor, DSEE Group Inc. self-performed much of the work, including demolition, excavation, cast-in-place concrete, onsite prefabrication, and road and highway construction.
