C MDC – UPPER FRANKLIN AVENUE
SEWER SEPARATION
As part of the Metropolitan District Commission's (MDC)
Clean Water Project aimed at controlling and reducing the
overflow of untreated sewage into local waterways, DSEE
Group Inc. was awarded the Upper Franklin Avenue Sewer
Separation Contract. Hartford, like many older urban areas,
had a combined storm drainage and sewer system, where all
flows merged into a single pipe leading to the wastewater
treatment facility. During high flow periods, such as rain
events, the treatment facility's capacity was often
exceeded, risking untreated sewage discharges into local
waterways.
To address this issue, the MDC proposed a plan to separate the sanitary sewer from the storm drainage system, reducing the burden on the treatment facility. The Upper Franklin Avenue Sewer Separation Project was a key component of this initiative. The project included the installation of approximately 103,000 linear feet of storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water piping, along with the construction of over 300 storm drainage and sanitary sewer structures. This work was conducted in a densely populated urban setting on the south side of Hartford, where existing and unknown utilities, deep excavation requiring shoring, and challenging ground conditions added to the complexity.
DSEE Group Inc. self-performed nearly all aspects of this project while closely coordinating with the entire project team under a highly aggressive schedule. The project required extensive traffic control, pedestrian safety measures, and coordination with local businesses and utility companies to ensure a safe and successful completion. Despite the challenges, DSEE Group Inc. delivered the project on time and to the highest standards, contributing significantly to the improvement of Hartford’s infrastructure.
